I love exercise machines that make you sore in areas where you’re flabby but never get sore. That tells me I’m exercising muscles that are generally neglected. The Leg Magic machine ($100 on Amazon.com) is the perfect machine to get to your upper inner-thigh muscles. What does this have to do with back pain? I sincerely believe that the success of my lower back & ab exercise program is due to the fact that I’m hitting more than the obvious muscles. Clearly bench crunches (video #5 in this series) and the Ab Coaster (video #7) work on the main abdominal muscles you need to strengthen in order to support your lower back. But your upper thigh muscles are important too. In video #9, I demonstrate the Gazelle Freestyle, which gives you great upper thigh stretching, and in this video I demo the Leg Magic machine that gets those inner thigh muscles. The total cost of all the machines I use in my lower back / ab workout was around $1000. That may sound like a lot to spend, but as exercise machines go, it’s really cheap. You can go to a gym and have access to lots of machines, but the question is, “will you do it 3-5 times each week for the rest of your life?” Unlikely. Of course, it’s also unlikely that you will use the equipment just because you buy it. It all gets down to self-discipline, self-motivation and commitment. This stretching & exercise program works for me, and I’m sharing it in the hopes that it will be helpful to you as well. Good luck!

In this 4 part video, Sarah Key, pre-eminent popular author of books about spinal problems and treater of low back pain, explains how troubles begin with sustained loading of the lumbar segments. The uninterrupted compression forces fluid from the discs and reduces their metabolic rate, which leads to breakdown. In the second half, Sarah takes you through the Pressure Change Therapy routine, using a BackBlock. In addition to the spinal decompression, Sarah shows you — in real time — the other two exercises which are vital for ongoing spinal health.

Eliptical trainers are great for people with bad knees who want to walk and possibly get an aerobic workout. And the Gazelle Freestyle is considered by some to be the “poor man’s eliptical trainer.” But this gem of a $175 machine has become a very important part of my lower back pain solution. It’s not really an eliptical trainer, and if it were, it woudn’t do much for my low back. Most eliptical trainers have a fixed or variable “stride” that might be as long as 20 inches or slightly more. The Gazelle Freestyle lets you have whatever stride your legs are capable of. So if you take long strides, it gives you a tremendous thigh stretch along with a great aerobic workout. But if you just walk with this machine, you won’t get much out of it. It’s a really fun machine to use, and I need fun in order to sustain this daily workout. If you’ve ever done a “runner’s stretch,” you’re stretching the same thigh muscles that this machine stretches in a long stride workout. You can’t get this workout by running. You can’t maintain the kind of sprint that this strid requires for long without getting totally exhausted. But I can do a 20-minute aerobic workout on the Gazelle Freestyle at full stride. I don’t do that every day though. I generally do 10 minutes at full stride, and in addition to the aerobic workout, I get a stretch like nothing I’ve ever had with any other machine or exercise. My back pain over the 8 year period that I lived with it, often traveled down my sciatic nerves …
