I love exercise machines that make you sore in areas where you’re flabby but never get sore. That tells me I’m exercising muscles that are generally neglected. The Leg Magic machine ($100 on Amazon.com) is the perfect machine to get to your upper inner-thigh muscles. What does this have to do with back pain? I sincerely believe that the success of my lower back & ab exercise program is due to the fact that I’m hitting more than the obvious muscles. Clearly bench crunches (video #5 in this series) and the Ab Coaster (video #7) work on the main abdominal muscles you need to strengthen in order to support your lower back. But your upper thigh muscles are important too. In video #9, I demonstrate the Gazelle Freestyle, which gives you great upper thigh stretching, and in this video I demo the Leg Magic machine that gets those inner thigh muscles. The total cost of all the machines I use in my lower back / ab workout was around $1000. That may sound like a lot to spend, but as exercise machines go, it’s really cheap. You can go to a gym and have access to lots of machines, but the question is, “will you do it 3-5 times each week for the rest of your life?” Unlikely. Of course, it’s also unlikely that you will use the equipment just because you buy it. It all gets down to self-discipline, self-motivation and commitment. This stretching & exercise program works for me, and I’m sharing it in the hopes that it will be helpful to you as well. Good luck!

www.gettoyourcore.com Posture correction is crucial as a low back pain exercise. Poor posture and anterior pelvic tilt from lower crossed syndrome as discussed here is a major cause of low back pain and stress induced body aging. Sports performance exercises must also keep these principles in mind. Bad posture will waste energy and create injury if not corrected and maintained.

All you need is a chair with a comfortable seat for this one. Much of the pain of low back pain comes from the muscles and fascia of the lower back. And anyone who is suffering low back pain is loathe to bend forwards to stretch this area (it hurts too much!) and it’s not long before you lose your confidence in this critical part of the body. Loss of function happens at the same time. This simple exercise loosens the oblique muscles first and then, by adding a gentle rotation, lets quadratus lumborum be stretched in time, too. The last part of the exercises uses trapezius to stretch latissimus dorsi—which connects directly to the thoraco-lumbar fascia. We have found that using the body to stretch itself yields the longest-lasting results (better than a partner or gravity in this regard). And all of this happens in this exercise with the spine unloaded, and the relevant muscles relaxed—so you can get the movement and the stretch without the pain and discomfort. Make sure you stretch the tighter side a second time; experience shows that a marked right–left difference in key functions is strongly correlated with recurring low back pain. I have disabled comments on all our clips, because too many people abuse the opportunity. I can be contacted through my channel if you want to discuss a particular subject; as well, there are the new Stretch Therapy Forums (www.kitlaughlin.com/forums). You only need a real email address to join and post your questions. As well, more …
