I just had a L5/S1 microdiscectomy 2 weeks ago. I had immidiate relief after the surgery was done. I had undergone PT for 2 months with absolutely no relief of pain so my physician advised meto undergo surgery, and so I did. Today is day 14 after the surgery and I have exactly the same symptoms as before surgery so I started wondering if my piriformis muscle could really be irritated, and on my own I started stretching this muscle and have done so for two days now and I have so much relief alrdy

man you pritty much just described exactly whats happening to me , i have had bad back and butt pain that rarely goes down my leg but can become quite intense in my hip and butt for a few years now , i have gotten mri’s and ct’s and all they show is some mild scoliosis and mild degeneration , after watching this video i think i have piriformis syndrome, i am seeing my doctor after the weekend and im going to tell him about this because he has never even mentioned it , thank you for this video :)

PART 6 – I also find many of my lower body bones snapping back in place, such as when I lie down to do my piriformis stretches, and as I lower my lower back onto the floor, I hear my right side snap and then my left. Also, as I lie down with my legs bent, I place a pillow in between my knees and squeeze my knees together and I feel bones snapping into place in my inner thighs that radiates to my pubic bone. Thank you all, & to the Dr. if you have taken the time to read my symptoms. Cry 4 help

Part 5 – I am told I need muscle strethening but it is not possible without being disabled for weeks at a time with unbearable pain. I am currently on my crutches and have been for the past two days because I was walking down a flight of stairs with my book bag on my left shoulder, in which was not at a shocking weight. Maybe 1 text book and some folders. I am to the point where I do not trust that I only have a piriformis issue. If so, IS THIS COMMON? See part 6 —- last one, I promise LOL

PART 4 – I am often scared merely to take a walk with my children who are 5 & 6 because I am terrified of the pain coming out of nowhere. Many times, I have taken a walk and then can’t walk without crutches for weeks at a time. I have discomfort and mild pain evey single day, but some days are horrifying. I tried stretching and yoga as opposed to working out on the treadmil since that was a recommendation by doctors and Physical therapists, but my dilemma is that I CAN NOT exercise. See part 5

PART 3 – After exercising for approximately 5 consecutive days (e.g. treadmill, resistance), I was unable to walk without crutches for six weeks. This is what I have been experiencing for almost a year now. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. I was unable to hold my weight (5’6″, 170lbs) on my left leg or use my upper body such as to pick up a grocery bag without an excruciating shooting nerve pain on my left lower back, right above my buttocks. See part 4

PART 2 – my pain has never shot down my leg even when it was at its worse. However, I do feel at times that my piriformis my tighten up a bit, and note my issues occur on my left side. I have gone through physical therapy in which helped me to enjoy a great month. I then asked my former orthopaedic if I can exercise he said, “do what ever makes you comfortable”, and so I did. See part 3 please, I need to know if someone has experienced MY symptoms before or currently. I don’t know where to turn

PART 1 —- I am a 36 yr old female who has been experiencing a great deal of pain on and off for approximately a year now. I have had xrays, along with an MRI of my Lumbar spine, in which indicated no significant damage to my spine where it would cause what I believe my pain of sciatica. However, I have had mild scoliosis since I was a child and my former orthopaedic physician believes that may be the root of my piriformis issue since it may cause me to be unstable. SEE PART 2

So glad I saw your video! Injured my back 18yrs ago & have had just abt every type of prodecure done to help w herniated disk & other related issues. Kinda disappointed & glad I’m just finding out that my problem could have been because of SI joint/ Piriformis Syndrome all along. This problem could have been treated yrs ago & my qualilty of life could have been so much better. Having Radio Frequency procedure done next wk on SI joint so I sure hope this heplsw my back & SI Joint pain. Thanks!

This doc is not that good, he forgot to mention about si loose ligaments and hypermobility in that joint. There is no way to fix it with piriformis injections!!! Btw piriformis syndrome is just a symptom of the problem, it’s not the root

Thanks Doc for the amazing explanation. I dont think there’s any body pain worse than sciatic nerve pain and mine was caused by nothing but a mattress. Pls people, get rid of your innerspring coil mattresses because they are the silent killers. These devils are destructive grills of steel layered with poor quality foam that quickly degradess causing the mattress to sink in and subjecting your muscles and nerves to pain from the springs. Give other types of mattresses a look no matter the cost.

this doctor is really good…I’ve been years at the physios been a sportman and activly play rugby.
It happend to me 2 weeks ago that I was well into the second hour of training and as I was just walcking I got an huge spasm in the lower back…after a week the pain mixed into something new to me, wich is apparently this Piriformis syndrom, where I have a pircing pain into my left buttock. at the beginning especially when I used to stend up from a sit position. I will do lot of stretching.

This confirms diagnosis as rec today by my local NHS physio dept. After 9 months of not knowing, and more recently having an x ray to rule out disc problems. I do have some degeneration, but as this guy says a lot of people with no pain do too! I have had numb foot and leg on walking, even round a shop for months and lower radiating pain over buttocks. So pleased I can now treat this by stretching and strengthening. This is what I suspected months ago….not joint, but muscular.
    Thanks!

Thank you so much for the thorough and easy-to-understand explanation. I so appreciate your use of the model to show details. This is EXACTLY what I have (from horseback riding, boot camp, intensive heavy lifting yard work, etc). I start physical therapy this week, but your video gave me a “leg up” (pun intended) on what will be needed, and I’m starting deep stretching today. Excellent video!

Check out Dr. Hal Martin, he operates piriformis arthroscopically and has great success rate compared to previous methods. I am trying to get the word out and hope other sufferers do also so this becomes more main stream!!!! Tell your doctors, look at the improvements with surgery in only the past 4 years, lets keep it up!
